Sharpening Tips - The Dan Macut Way
This is the jig I came up with to allow me to use
the Lil’ Shaver on a
bench grinder when taking off the excess metal on a new head right
out of the package.
Basically it is just a nail mounted below the grinding wheel that
accepts the Lil’ Shaver jig.
To start I mounted the bench grinder to a 2 x 12 board so it can not
move. Then I took a nail that best matches the rod from the
Lil’ Shaver file. I cut the head off of the nail and drove it into
the 2 x 12 below the grinding wheel. The accompanying photos show
how to determine the correct location of the nail. I just used the
file and rod from the Lil’ Shaver to best determine the angle and
line up the nail below grinding wheel.
Center the nail in the middle of the grinding wheel and slightly
under. The next step is to screw an ordinary dry-wall screw next to
and in front of the nail to act as a “stop” for the jig. This
ensures the jig maintains the correct placement and angle on the
grinding wheel – the screw also allows for “fine tuning” of the jig
making exact place of the nail unnecessary.
Adjust the screw to allow for the degree of angle – or grind you
would like.
Use very light pressure when grinding – one or two passes should be
sufficient. Do not overheat or burn the head or you will destroy the
factory temper. I finish up by using the Lil’ Shaver jig and rod /
file like you would normally do and I like to use a crock stick for
that “razor” edge.

sharpening jig.
Photo B shows how to determine the placement of the nail to achieve
the correct angle for grinding.
Photo C shows the placement of the nail and screw. The screw is a
“stop” and also allows for fine tuning so the blade of the broadhead
touches the grinding wheel in the correct spot giving you the
perfect edge.
